P&C Associations

What is a P&C?

A P&C is a vital part of the school community, providing a connection between the school, the parents and carers of students, and the wider community. As a volunteer-based group made up of parents, carers and citizens, P&C Associations fulfil a number of important functions that support Queensland public schools.

For more than a century, parents and local community members have given their time, skills and energy through P&Cs to strengthen schools and support public education across the state.

While many people recognise P&Cs through sausage sizzles and fundraising events, this is only one part of what they do. P&C Associations often run essential school services such as canteens, uniform shops, instrumental music support and outside school hours care, while also helping build strong, connected school communities.

Most importantly, P&Cs give parents and carers a collective voice, empowering them to contribute to decisions that shape students’ learning, wellbeing and school culture.

How are P&C Associations governed?

P&C Associations in Queensland are statutory bodies established under the Education (General Provisions) Act. Their operations are supported by a standard constitution, accounting manual, policies and procedures that help guide good governance, accountability and volunteer protections.

What do P&C Associations do?

P&C Associations play a key role in bringing Queensland public school communities together. Through meetings, events and a wide range of activities, P&Cs foster collaboration between parents, carers, school leaders and the wider community, all working toward the shared goal of strengthening public education.

Common P&C Association activities include:

  • Holding regular meetings with office bearers, members, school staff and principals
  • Supporting school improvement projects
  • Hosting community and school events
  • Running essential school services such as canteens, uniform shops and OSHC
  • Fundraising to support programs, resources and facilities
  • Celebrating key school and community days
  • Delivering community support initiatives
  • Representing and advocating for the school community
  • Working alongside school leadership on matters affecting students and public education

Who can join a P&C Association?

P&C Associations are for everyone in the school community. Membership is open to parents and carers of children attending the school, school staff, and local citizens who support their Queensland public school.

P&C Queensland believes school communities are strongest when parents and carers are actively involved in their child’s education, and when as many people as possible take part in their local P&C Association.

P&C meetings, activities and initiatives are open to all members of the school community, and everyone is encouraged to get involved in ways that suit them.
